Student exposure to sustainability

An article I wrote on business education in Canada was published last week in the Toronto Star. It was interesting to do some in-depth research on how Canadian business schools are exposing their students to sustainability, or CSR as many of them still call it. There is so much happening across the country from green campus activities, centers related to sustainability (66% of universities in Canada have a center which focuses on research in this area), electives, certificate programs etc.

Where they are lacking is actually what most universities around the world are working on right now, and that is how to actually embedd sustainability into the business school curriculum rather than just adding it on. My favorite example (and one that is not unique) that highlights this is York University, which ranks 1st globally on the Beyond Grey Pinstripes list of ‘most sustainable business schools’. The ranking is based on availability of relevant courses, student exposure, relevant courses on for-profit impact and faculty research. Although they rank first in research and courses they are much lower down the list in terms of actual student exposure and courses with for-profit impact. For a Business School, isn’t that supposed to be the point?
